Matt Ward: Hello and welcome to episode two of the FilmWord Podcast. I'm Matt Ward and my co-host
Jeff: I'm Jeff.
Matt Ward: co-host Jeff.
Jeff: Beach yeah.
Matt Ward: Still working on it. We're still working on it. Episode two. That's
Jeff: We're good. Episode two. Just wait till twenty. Yeah.
Matt Ward: right. All right. So let's jump right in. The let's let's go over for a minute what What we've watched over the past week. Jeff, you wanna lead us off?
Jeff: Yeah, I'll I'll start. so on Friday night, I think it was, we we watched a a show that I've been meaning to watch for a little while called Nirvana the Band, The Show, the Movie, which is a comedy about it's about some guys who are trying to like well I think it I guess it's a Canadian show and then they made a movie out of it. but kind of like a Bill and Ted kind of type comedy. they they do some time travel. Which is kind of fun. Yeah. But they're basically like their band is trying to get into a a venue. and they're like the whole thing is just centered around like this really, really bad band, like trying to perform at this really nice venue. I would probably give that one I I for I think I forgot to to score it, but probably give it a solid three out of five on that. Lisa said it was a little bit long in terms of the Like you know, I thought it was pretty funny, but she kind of got a little bit tired of some of the the silly silliness, I guess you could say. So I watched Nirvana the band, the musical Nirvana the band, the the show, the movie. And then I watched Casablanca based on your number one Oscar Best Picture recommendation, because I had seen it, but it's been a while. And then also based on your recommendation, rewatched Arrival, which I haven't seen in in some time. So that's kinda how I spent the week. but I will say we've got some some stuff to talk about because been seeing a lot of trailers and a lot of stuff upcoming. So we'll see that this coming week. How about you, Matt? What did you watch this week?
Matt Ward: watched Baby Driver. I'd never seen it before. pretty good. I mean it's lots of really cool car chases. I think one of my kids really liked it. The other one was like, well, all right. It's pretty good. But Edgar Wright, let's see, it was twenty seventeen and really great soundtrack. again lots lots of really exciting action in it. Kind of a fun story, a little bit different than than normal. So that was good. And then also watched A hundred and two minutes that changed America, the documentary about nine eleven. since we just kinda moved through nine eleven again. And I've watched a lot of the Netflix documentaries about nine eleven. there's some really good ones that are on there. I'd never watched this one. This one's a lot more of the it's like personal like home video from people that were were recording. And they just run it all linear, so they don't You know, it's interesting 'cause they only they'll show like one video, one angle of a plane hitting one of the w the towers, and then they just keep it going. And different perspective, kind of an interesting one. Some of the videos I'd seen before, you know, I think since it was made in two thousand eight I probably would have seen all the videos by now. But there are a few one a few of them that I had not seen. So it was it was good. And they do a good job of kinda telling the story. And I was showing showing my boys that for a little bit just to help them better understand nine eleven a little bit more. I think that
Jeff: Yeah, yeah.
Matt Ward: Our our the rising generation seems to have a lack of appreciation for for nine eleven, unfortunately, and anything to help them better understand what happened that day and how it shook so many of us. So I was good. And then started to watch, did not finish, but started to rewatch No Country for Old Men out of waver wavering a little bit on my on my top five list, because I do I really do love No Country for Old Men. I I I love Cormac McCarthy. in his so many of his books and that book, the Cohen brothers talk about how, you know, they were able to just open up the book and pretty much transfer dialogue, you know, from from the book into the movie. And you can tell it's it's just so well done. beautifully shot. anyway, so I'm really enjoying it. I just haven't haven't made all the way through yet. that's that's what I've watched. Yeah.
Jeff: Feel like yeah, I was gonna say I feel like the Cone brothers haven't made a splash in a little bit.
Matt Ward: I don't know if they ha I I feel like I just was checking to see what they're up to. Maybe they've maybe they just haven't done one together in a little while. I don't know I'm not yeah.
Jeff: I don't know. Maybe I need to just Google it. I will say Baby Driver. We listen to a lot of that baby song, you know? Baby. baby. Yeah. That's a that's a good one. And then I was gonna say, yeah, nine eleven. Man. That's that's just one that captures the attention every time. I mean you don't you don't like to revisit it, but at the same time, like it's just I think it's something that's so incredible that it's hard to kind of get out of your mind like when it comes around every year. It's just it was just a terrible, terrible thing. And I mean fascinating story obviously, but very, very sad the whole thing. So we're actually headed to New York in October. So we can talk about that offline, but my travel plan.
Matt Ward: No? Yeah. Hey what dates and what hotel? No.
Jeff: We might might take Oscar to see the memorial, so it might be interesting, so
Matt Ward: Yeah. Yeah, it's a really really well done memorial. We did the underground museum, like the where you can go underground and you can see I mean there are lots of really good good parts to it. And yeah, it's just crazy. Twenty five years. It's
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. It's it's passed by quickly. well let's dive into industry news. So I I think we want to start off talking about the Emmys. Now I will say I had never heard of Widows Bay, and I think that was kind of a a reaction from a lot of the internet. I think some of us were surprised that Widows Bay won as much as it did. I still haven't watched it. I mean I probably should like hunker down and like see what everyone's talking about, but Was little surprised to see that one win so many. but I know you had some thoughts. I don't watch a ton of T V. I I'm still working my way through Silo, which is
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: on Apple T V, but like other than that, I'm not really watching like a ton of stuff. but what were your thoughts on on the Emmys, if if any?
Matt Ward: Well, just a a few that you know, I I was happy to see that that that Ray Seahorn won for Plurobus. I've not but but I haven't watched Plurobus. I don't have Apple T V right now, so I need to get after that. But just feel like she's you know, with with some with Better Call Saul just phenomenal actress. And so I thought like and she was nominated at least once or twice for Better Call Saul, but never won. And so happy that she's she's been able to pick that up. And then, you know, we were gonna talk about Martin Short. Right. He he had the funny whenever they they announced the winner he he sat there and was ripping up his his accept you know, acceptance speech.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah.
Matt Ward: That was pretty pretty funny moment. So what was the documentary that you watched of him?
Jeff: Yeah, it's on Netflix. It's called Marty Life is Short and kind of goes through his whole kind of life journey, but really gives you an appreciation for for the guy and you know, his he lost his wife maybe in their like fifties. I think she she passed away and he is he's actually lost like a ton of like I think his mom and dad both died pretty early and so it just kinda goes through some of the like pain that Martin Short has been through, but he has a remarkable ability to like take all his pain that he's felt and like turn it into humor, you know, just kind of keep moving forward all the time. So I love Martin Short. I think he's a great guy. And actually the death of Catherine O'Hara, you know, a few months ago really led me down this like sad I think we might have even talked about it, but like this sad, like it's an end of an era with like the whole Canadian second city kind of
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: You know, just that whole group. Like Eugene Levy is still around, but he's getting like pretty old and John Candy obviously already passed away. And you know, it's just like so many of these guys that we love from from those from those like Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Christopher Guest movies, I think.
Matt Ward: That's the show, yeah. Yeah.
Jeff: so it was a fun era. but I'm gonna be sad when like that Steve Martin, Martin Short kind of era dies. So
Matt Ward: Yeah. Well
Jeff: yeah.
Matt Ward: and my boys love three amigos. They they thought that they got such
Jeff: that's a great movie.
Matt Ward: a trip a trip out of that one. And then I always enjoyed him. I don't think it's probably the most popular role, but I think a lot of people still like I I enjoyed him on as Frank. Alright, on Father of the Bride. That was that was
Jeff: yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Matt Ward: a good one. I enjoyed the Father of the Bride at least the first two Father of the Brides. Did they make I don't know if they made any more, but first two were really I think they did, right? I don't know. Did they
Jeff: I think they just did two. Yeah.
Matt Ward: just do the two? Anyway, that was Anyway, good good memories that with with those. So
Jeff: I was gonna say one thing that they did and I know should move on, but one thing they did in that documentary is they were talking to Martin Short about that role. And it was funny because he basically was speaking in an unintelligible language, and you know, the idea was that Steve Martin couldn't understand anything he was saying, but the the mother and and the the mom and daughter could understand everything he said. and and the like studio executives and stuff are like you gotta like dial it back a little bit and so he like dialed it back so that it was like kind of intelligible and he was like you it like he and Steve Martin were like no like we're gonna go like full on like just nonsense and so it's pretty incredible. Like he's he's a an incredible comedian in that sense as well. all right some other news so we've got Toy Story 5 hitting streaming September twenty third. Been putting this off
Matt Ward: Yeah, it's coming. Coming fast. I
Jeff: I know you've been holding holding your thoughts in about
Matt Ward: I know, I will wait I'll wait another week if that's what it's gonna take for us to have a nice conversation about Toy Story Five.
Jeff: So Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we'll talk about that next week. And then finally talk about Days of Thunder Two for a second, June second, twenty twenty eight. So we've got we've got a little time to wait on that one.
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: What what do you think about what do you think about this remake? Well I say remake sequel.
Matt Ward: Well, I don't know if I needed a two year a two year a little warning that that one's coming out. they're really priming us for it. I don't know if Days of Thunder, the original you know, I enjoyed at least parts of the original Days of Thunder. I enjoyed Robert Duvall in there. I I enjoy there are lots of good good little quotes from from that film. I just you know and Tony Scott directed he directed Top Gun. I mean lots of really good It was well directed. But even to I think Tony Scott even said he's like, I think it's pretty boring recording watch watching these cars go around the track over and over again. We're trying to make it intense and and action packed and it's like they're just going around in circles. So I'll be curious to s I'll be curious to see how how it turns out. What do you think?
Jeff: Well, I I I think I mentioned this, but the the F one craze I think is is the main reason why they decided to make Days of Thunder two. F one was very popular, got nominated for Best Picture, for whatever reason. I didn't I didn't love Yeah, yeah, I didn't
Matt Ward: Yeah, that was kind of an interesting one. I'm not sure if that you look at the rest of that list and you're like, All right, and then F one. All right, that's good.
Jeff: I didn't love F1. I understand why people enjoyed it. I mean, obviously like something like the audio mixing and things you know, things like that are are interesting, but truthfully, like we've played enough top gear in like these video games over the years, like where you're kind of behind the like in the in the driver's seat. Like it just kind of felt like okay, like I'm kind of like in the driver's seat.
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: But yeah, I mean I imagine Days of Thunder will probably have a lot of those scenes where you're kind of like in, you know. in his from his perspective. and yeah, I truthfully like back to the original point of like going around the loop over and over again. I'd be surprised if they don't focus a little bit more on the plot. and then the other piece is just I think Tom Cruise is getting a little too old for these kinds of roles. he's got a new movie coming out. I think it's called Dagger. Is that right? Have you seen this one? The Digger Digger.
Matt Ward: Digger, digger. Yeah.
Jeff: And That's probably a more suitable role, honestly. Like I just like the guy is in his sixties now. It's it's like it yeah, I'm gonna be a NASCAR driver in my sixties. Like, come on. Like you're not fooling anybody,
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah. That's
Jeff: man.
Matt Ward: I mean he's but he's he's the pro, you know, he's he's the one that you just can't they just can't let him go. But you know, if they would bring
Jeff: He's the manager.
Matt Ward: back yeah, maybe but if they bring back the original cast, I Robert Duvall, rest in peace. But Michael Ruka Rooker Rooker, John C. Riley, Carrie Ells, I mean it'd be great. It'd be great, right? If you get all these guys back. Get them all back. Do a little
Jeff: I just well sure. Sure, but I just don't I don't know if those guys are still Yeah.
Matt Ward: I'm sure if all those they'd be interested in coming make a little cameo to the Val Kilmer.
Jeff: No, I I can guarantee that Michael Rooker and Carrie Elvis are are interested.
Matt Ward: They're like, whatever, yeah, just tell me when and I'll be there. So and then I wanted to I wanted
Jeff: Sign me up. Do it for free.
Matt Ward: to throw the quote out. Robert Duval from from the original Days of Thunder. He he didn't slam you, he didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you, he rubbed ya. And rubbin' son is racing. That was that's good. Good one.
Jeff: Classic.
Matt Ward: Than thanks, Robert Duval. I mean, er some people remember you for Godfather. Some of us remember you for Days of Thunder.
Jeff: That's right. so I had mentioned last week that Rocky was in my top five of best picture movies. And then I went to the gym the next day and someone at the gym was like, Hey, yeah, I heard they're making a movie about this the story of Rocky and how it was made. And so I went online and I found I play Rocky. I hadn't hadn't even heard that was coming out, but it's actually coming out pretty soon. I think it's coming out in October or November. And the trailer looks pretty interesting actually. So I'm kind of excited to see that one. Did you have a chance to watch the trailer?
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah I did. I think it looks looks pretty interesting. Seems like a lot of drama. A lot of drama. You know? But
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, it's kind of interesting to see the behind the scenes, everything that went down. yeah.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Yeah, I mean anything about Rocky, I'd be down.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, you you can make another Rocky Balboa kind of, you know, where he makes a comeback. It's fine.
Matt Ward: Yeah, just keep on making them. It's it's just sad. I mean, it's sad they didn't that they didn't want him in Creed three because I still I mean, even just give him a few minutes. I mean it's his it's his baby, you know.
Jeff: They didn't want him in? I thought he said he was done.
Matt Ward: I thought that they kinda told him like we want to focus on a little more of the story of Creed, you know, baby Creed. I don't know. I'm sure everybody has their story.
Jeff: That's dumb. I I like I like Creed. I like the Creed movies. I like Michael B. Jordan a lot. But I would love to see Creed versus Rocky, you know, you know what I'm saying? Michael B. Jordan versus Sylvester Sallone.
Matt Ward: That's that's the real yeah. Or they could have Rocky's son from Rocky Five come and Rocky some of the other maybe those two should fight.
Jeff: Which is really just Rocky V. Yeah. It's just Rocky V over yeah. Exactly. It's just Rocky V over again. And then let's see, Cars turns twenty this year, so they did a re release. Did you go to the theater
Matt Ward: Ugh.
Jeff: and see it?
Matt Ward: No, I I think I've watched cars enough in my life that I don't need to revisit that that beauty. I mean, it
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: it is you know, this I guess is like fine wine or whatever they say. It it probably does get better o with time. Like I remember watching it the first time being like, What is this? But over like my well, my kids, my oldest son, really liked it and would watch it all the time. And so I was watching it like multiple times a week. And you know, there's a certain They got James Taylor singing a song. I mean, there's some good moments in there, for sure. But I'm just amazed at how much mileage, They they got cars and the cars franchise. It just keeps going. It's subtle.
Jeff: Yeah. And I guess it's it's like Days of Thunder too. Of course.
Matt Ward: That's true. Maybe they'll have a little cameo, Lightning McQueen. We'll just pop in. That'd be see there's that's what they need.
Jeff: all right, so other headlines real quick, practical magic two, dethrone Spider-Man at the box office. Any thoughts there?
Matt Ward: I you know, I I never watched the original Practical Magic. I did watch a trailer for Practical Magic 'cause I really didn't understand the whole premise of the movie and seems pretty messed up. But did you go and see the second one?
Jeff: nope, haven't actually seen the first or the second. So just the Yeah.
Matt Ward: Yeah, I know so you know, not really our cup of tea maybe. It's
Jeff: Yeah, we're probably not the target demographic. So
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: and then I guess lastly, I've just I you know I've been following some movies from some of the film festivals. Obviously, you can see everything. That one got some major press, kind of a very surprising teaser that came out that Elizabeth Holmes would actually be willing to give that kind of access to Nathan Fielder of all people. but
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: that was a big deal at Telluride. we've also got yeah
Matt Ward: Well and we were saying before, like the first you watch it and it looks like it's like the it's AI created. I mean it's it's kind of a bizarre look to the the at least the clip that they were putting out a lot of and it's a very interesting story. and I'm trying to remember the name of the book that I read about it, but yeah,
Jeff: Bad blood.
Matt Ward: Yeah, Bad Blood. There you go, thanks. And yeah, I mean I'm curious to see how they do with it and and if this is the the final chat, because they did a T V miniseries on it too, didn't they? A while ago. And so
Jeff: Yeah, they do.
Matt Ward: just how many how many different ways can you tell the Elizabeth Holmes story? But I'm open for one more, I guess.
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: So I saw social reckoning on there. You excited for that one? Little swerkin action, maybe? Yeah.
Jeff: I mean I love Aaron Sorkin, you know. I do love Aaron Sorkin. Whether you know how this movie's gonna be, I guess we'll find out. I guess to me was it the the Facebook files? Is that kind of what they called it? Like when I think the whole storyline is like that
Matt Ward: yeah, the the investigative reporting into it. Yeah. I
Jeff: Yeah, the the was it around like the Russia thing or I I forget, but
Matt Ward: The thing is the the depression and the teenagers and things like that.
Jeff: okay. Yeah, yeah, like they knew that it was it was causing harm in kids, but yeah. Well they s they still know that.
Matt Ward: Yeah. I mean the trailer so far, like and I I really I thought the original social network was very enjoyable, very easy to watch. David Fenture directed, Aaron Sorkin wrote it. I mean, very well done. this one so far, the trailer has has not gotten me that excited so far. I I'm not sure if I'm super enthusiastic about seeing it, but I'll go see it because Sorkin wrote it and directed it. And so well,
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: go check it out. But the it seems like it's already up on a pedestal even with the trailer. You know, it's it feels and I'm not saying there's nothing wrong with Facebook or anything, I'm sure there there's plenty of things, but just so far it's like that seems pretty heavy and it doesn't seem very entertaining either, so
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, they did get the voice right though. I forget that actor's name. Gregory Anyway, I forget his name. The actor who's gonna play the role. but he did get the voice pretty good. And then we actually already bought tickets for Avengers Doomsday, which I think is in December. Buy your tickets now, folks. It's kinda it's you know, it's gonna be another one it's
Matt Ward: Yeah, that's right. Don't wait. You end up having wait having to wait weeks.
Jeff: gonna be another Odyssey kind of situation. So
Matt Ward: Maybe they'll maybe they'll release it on IMAX so we can watch it on a big screen with the tops chop.
Jeff: and then another one that I think was from the I forget which film festival, if this was Toronto, but the debut is making kind of some headlines. I don't know if you had a chance to watch this one. This is Jesse Eisenberg directing, which I think is his second movie. The the other one was gosh, I can't remember But I watched it and it was the one where they go to Poland.
Matt Ward: Ma maybe we should pull perplexity or something. I D B.
Jeff: No, A Real Pain. Yeah, a real pain. And that one was pretty good. That one had Karen Colkin in it.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Was that one good? Was it? Yeah.
Jeff: and that one that one was pretty enjoyable. But the debut, this is where I guess Julianne Moore is like trying to become an actress. She's like a mom and then she like tries to become an actress and then I think Paul Giomatti is like kind of mean to I don't know. I I guess we'll have to see.
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: let's see. When she lands a small part in community theater production, she transforms from a shy housewife into a zealous method actor who's willing to do anything to protect the artistic integrity of her role. Okay. Well,
Matt Ward: There we go.
Jeff: Daniel Day Lewis action. man, could you imagine being a method actor? my gosh, that'd be exhausting.
Matt Ward: Right. They there were some Yeah, they they point they pointed that out a little bit during the Emmys, I think is of the other comedians on there was talking about it. Anyway, you ready to jump into some movie movie reviews?
Jeff: Yeah, yeah. I'll do you want me to just dive into to a few of the ones that I've seen recently or what what you want to do?
Matt Ward: Yeah, do we we can we can jump into to any of The Yeah, do you wanna lead off with one?
Jeff: Yeah, well, let's see. So I just wanted to maybe go over a couple that I that I've seen recently. they weren't in the last week, so I guess I didn't include them in the opening segment, but maybe just get these out there. Is that is that cool? I guess yeah.
Matt Ward: Go for it. Yeah.
Jeff: so we've got is this thing on? This one is Will Arnett. I don't know if you heard about this one. it's on Hulu. It's it's like basically this kind of disgruntled divorced dad who tries his hand at stand up comedy. I d I actually got it on a review from someone else and watched it and didn't love it. I'd give it a three out of five. I think that you know, it's fun to see Bradley Cooper Bradley Cooper's in as well. Laura Dern, Will Arnett. Again, I don't I didn't find it like super enjoyable, but You know, kind of an entertaining entertaining drama. the next one was Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die, also on Hulu with Sam Rockwell. Kind of like an Edge of Tomorrow. You remember I I think they did they change the name of Edge of Tomorrow?
Matt Ward: Well, there was the live live, die, repeat, right? That was but
Jeff: Lived I repeat.
Matt Ward: Edge of Tomorrow is how it's listed. I just watched that one again. Big fan of Edge of Tomorrow. Tom Frews, Elizabeth Blunt
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, I like I liked Edge of Tomorrow a lot because it kind of goes through the multiple cycles and like progressively they get they get better. Good Luck Have Fun Don't Die has Sam Rockwell and it's it's a similar and I Juno Temple also from from Ted Lasso. and it's like a similar plot, except that it's this Sam Rockwell is this man from the future who is trying to take down or not take down, but like install security protocols into AI so that the AI doesn't destroy the world in the future. and he comes back and he basically explains to everyone like, hey, I've been here 300 times. We always fail at our mission. And tonight I'm gonna assemble this team. We're gonna try again. And so they don't really like go through multiple cycles like they do in LivedI, but it's like the same idea. Like he's a man from the future that's like giving it multiple tries and he knows everything about the people that he's choosing and maybe maybe a few plot holes, but very enjoyable watch. definitely like a fun ride with that.
Matt Ward: Terminator. Send them back in time. Send them back in time to fix it. And then if that doesn't work, send them back at a different time point in time. Just keep on trying. Different times.
Jeff: Yeah. I mean who who's the guy that like gets this job and they're like, You're gonna be that guy and he's like I mean I guess in
Matt Ward: You ain't going back. Yeah, that's
Jeff: a sense it would be fun, but also kind of stressful.
Matt Ward: I'm waiting for the the the new Terminator movie where they go back to to Sarah Connor's parents and they try and wipe them out. You know, that's that's a real that's how you strike at the root.
Jeff: That's right. That's right. That would probably be a pretty easy mission to accomplish.
Matt Ward: Yeah, that one seems like a little more manageable and they probably could could knock it out.
Jeff: Yeah, that's true. I don't why did they why didn't they think of that in Terminator Two?
Matt Ward: She's she's gonna give some resistance. Just keep going back. Keep going back to nobody cares.
Jeff: but anyway, give that one a four out of five. I already went over Nirvan Nirvana, the band. and then Coyote vs. Acne, I haven't brought up, but did not really love this one. We went to see it with Oscar. Oscar's probably listening to this now, and he's gonna be very disappointed that I wasn't in love with that movie. but just
Matt Ward: The truth comes out. Yeah.
Jeff: yeah. But just felt like it was a lot of slapstick and just like couldn't like no no real plot and just very hard to like get behind. any yeah, I d I think a lot of the so the reviews on that movie are great. So I kinda walked into it thinking it was great. And then, you know, you come to find out that the real reason why the reviews are so great is that everyone was just standing up against Warner Brothers and like, I can't believe you shelved this and maybe there was a reason, you know I I
Matt Ward: Maybe there's a reason. I mean
Jeff: mean I love Will Forte, great guy, but really not not the best content. So
Matt Ward: I mean and and in your defense, have you ever watched the original Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons from Looney Tunes? I mean, you watch a few of those and you're like, I think I got it. Got the basic concept and the plot line here. I know if
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: I need to watch, you know, a hundred episodes of this.
Jeff: And I also don't know if I need to watch a courtroom drama about that thing that you just said. So anyway, two point five out of five on that one. My
Matt Ward: So all right.
Jeff: lowest review yet. All right, well let's dive into do you want to talk about arrival for a little bit?
Matt Ward: Yeah, let's talk well, do you wanna do the new or the old first? Well th I guess we can start with a little throwback to
Jeff: Yeah, I mean, do you have do have any other new stuff that you wanna discuss?
Matt Ward: Any new stuff? Not so much. I have some old like I mean we were gonna talk train dreams, right? You wanna talk train dreams for a minute? I
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we can talk train dreams.
Matt Ward: I I really enjoyed train dreams a lot and and this was fairly recent, so for me this is pretty much last week, but it was a twenty twenty five movie that that came out. twenty twenty five, you can watch it on Netflix. Joel Edgerton. I was the pretty much the main you've seen it. I mean it's he's the main guy. He's he's in he's pretty much every scene. And you know, it's it's a little more I think more thought provoking. It has a few scenes that are a little more violent, or at least I don't think they sh they don't show as much of the violence. They they show one part that's a little rough. but just kind of this guy's reflections. He's a lumberjack or logger, I guess is the proper term. in the early nineteen hundreds. It's kinda moving around, has a little family, and and but he ri he goes around and he chops down the trees and lays railroad tracks and kinda makes his way through through America. And you know, I th I think that I liked it. I and I I made the mistake of breaking my viewing up into two parts because
Jeff: Mm.
Matt Ward: I was really enjoying it for the first probably hour, hour fifteen. And and then I I kinda transitioned and the said the the last thirty minutes gets a little It's a little long, and shifts gears a little bit. but but overall I thought it was very well done, very beautiful film, and just brings up a lot of I think there's a point where he says, you know, that he that he kept on going through life. his rob Robert Greener. and he's like you know, Robert was spent he kept on waiting for for some like aha moment for his life, right? Some like
Jeff: Right.
Matt Ward: This is why this is why these things have happened. This is what it all means. And and it's kinda like I don't really know if he if he necessarily finds it. Maybe a nice nice reflection on on life sometimes. Although I I think we have a of meaning and things with with life, but very well acted is but it's it's a it's a quiet acting, right? And I think Joel Edgerton always does a really good job with those kind of roles. Your thoughts
Jeff: Yeah, yeah.
Matt Ward: and I would give it, you know, I'd I always feel bad. I I I maybe four and a half out of five. Like I just really I enjoyed it. I thought it was very it it's l it stuck with me, you know, and I I'm always a sucker for things that just emotionally stick with ya and and make you think about your life a little bit. And I feel like this one does. So your thoughts?
Jeff: Yeah, yeah. I'm I was I was a big fan of it, mostly because I came away from it still thinking about it. which, you know, was the case with a few of the movies last year. I know y you still need to watch Hamnet. That one really got me thinking as well.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Some of us.
Jeff: but you know, I agree. I well, first of all, from a I mean, from a cinematography perspective, I thought it was from my perspective the most beautiful movie of the year, like in terms of how it was shot and I mean, obviously we're suckers for landscape and you know that kind of thing, but you know, it was beautifully filmed, beautifully made. And from a from a story perspective, yeah. I mean, I I don't think anyone would be opposed to you saying that the first hour is like pretty engaging, and then maybe the second hour was a little bit less like engaging.
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: maybe they maybe they intended it that way, and maybe that's Partly life, right? Like maybe you could make an argument for, you know, up to up to twenty five or thirty, life is pretty engaging and then it kinda slows down a little bit at some point. but
Matt Ward: What are you talking about? Well, you know, that's an interesting I you know, I I was always a very committed journ journaler, journal keeper. And I feel like sometimes I s there's still plenty to write about, but you know, as you get older, I f feel like you start saying it to yourself, like nobody wants to hear about the the mundane, you know, cycles of life, right? And and so I it's true. I mean everything the first half maybe is a little more exciting in that regard, right? In terms
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: of things to report. But
Jeff: Yeah, it's interesting. I I didn't read the book. so I mean maybe there's something to be said for that as well. But no, I mean I I loved the I love the perspective that you pointed out, which was again it was just at the end of his life that he kind of that things kind of started making sense for him, that things started clicking. the purpose of life kind of started having meaning, but it was only at the end.
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: you know, it it's Kind of a bit of a tragedy, bit of a sad story for for him. but overall, really enjoyed it. I'd I'd probably also give it a four four point five out of five. and really enjoyed it. I mean, this leads us to a separate conversation, which is just like more in general, you know, years that the Academy's gotten it wrong in terms of like which movies they pick. I'm not saying that Train Dream should have been best picture by any means. I personally would have chosen Hamnet. But the I just think that the gosh, I'm and I keep keep slipping my mind what that movie was even called. Twenty twenty six Best Picture. Sorry. Do you know? Off the top of your head. One battle after another, yeah, yeah. It
Matt Ward: Well that yeah. I mean that
Jeff: keeps one battle after another, top Paul Thomas Anderson. The one that keeps coming back to my mind is everything everywhere all at once. But I'm like, Well that wasn't that wasn't the same.
Matt Ward: Yeah. There have been there have been so many where you just you just scratch your head and you f it's it's like is this really is this the one? You know, you have all these masterpieces that you've made and then they choose the one and you're like kinda like, alright, I mean I feel like maybe they just decided kinda like the departed, which departed's fine, you know, it's got a lot going on. exciting film, but like you know Was that Scorsese's best picture? And I know this stuff. It doesn't work like that, right? To say, you know, well, we're evaluating you on all your films. We're just saying in this moment, you know, they they have one but
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Matt Ward: I feel like the Academy is just kind of a strange organization sometimes. But but yeah, same thing with one battle
Jeff: Well, yeah.
Matt Ward: after another. It's just, you know, is that the one that you know, especially when it's you have There Will Be Blood, you have some other ones that were really I feel like just better better films. I mean I I'm still struggling to I kinda gave up on one battle after another. And so I I missed all the the ending. I know the ending had something, but I just I I lost yes.
Jeff: I mean, I watched the whole movie and I can tell you I I d I didn't really get it. I mean th there there was a cool scene, like a cool kind of action scene toward the end that was pretty compelling. just don't really get it. I think it a lot of times it's just Paul Thomas Anderson's time and you know, the cultural moment and
Matt Ward: Sure. I think yeah, I think that's right. And and he should be rec yeah. He he absolutely should be recognized. It's just it's sad whenever it finally happens and you're like, Yeah, that's really that one? 'Cause that's how everybody's gonna remember
Jeff: That one that one then?
Matt Ward: it. Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. well yeah, go ahead.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Some of the the other one that you just mentioned, the everywhere everything
Jeff: Everything everywhere all at once.
Matt Ward: everywhere at one all at once. That was another one where you know, it's just anytime that you get too much action into a story and and you kinda jump it around, I mean it felt kinda like this kind of multiverse deal, which is an easy way for me to just be like, Okay but
Jeff: Yeah, yeah. I mean I liked it, but you know, again, and maybe maybe
Matt Ward: Yeah, that was enjoyable.
Jeff: we'd have to revisit the whole list and see like was there actually something better that year, but
Matt Ward: Fablemans? I mean Fablemans was on there. I like that. So anyway. It didn't I mean I don't know
Jeff: I like Phalements. well let's talk let's talk about yeah.
Matt Ward: Yeah, go ahead.
Jeff: Let's talk about arrival for a little bit. Cause
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: Oscar and I did watch this and it was on your recommendation. and
Matt Ward: yeah. Love arrival.
Jeff: I mean I hadn't seen it since twenty sixteen. So I actually didn't really remember the main plot points until I saw it again. And awesome. It's gonna be hard
Matt Ward: No s no spoilers, Jeff. No spoilers. It's
Jeff: to resist.
Matt Ward: Yeah, I know. It's like the whole the whole movie kinda hinges on on spoilers, but
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah. But essentially, for those who haven't seen it, well, maybe you should just go watch it. But I mean the the audio is incredible. So we have this like nice projector screen now with the five five channel audio with like a nice bass. And man, that bass was just rumbling the whole time, you know.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Yeah.
Jeff: the audio was incredible. I think the the storytelling is very, very you could say deliberate. Some what some might say slow. maybe that's why some people didn't like it as much. because it is very, very like they they'll really take a scene and like draw it out at certain parts. but it definitely landed for me. tell us tell us a little bit about why you like Arrival so much and and kind of why it's one of your go tos.
Matt Ward: Yeah. I mean I so so kind of the the premise of it. So this is Denis Villan Villaneux. I I said it wrong. He's was French Canadian? Yeah.
Jeff: you can just call him Dennis.
Matt Ward: Denis Denis, right? Isn't it anyway. People Yeah.
Jeff: I'm sure it's Denny, but you know, if you meet him in person you can say Dennis.
Matt Ward: I I wouldn't but so
Jeff: Anyway.
Matt Ward: he this is the director of Dune, the Dune movies. and he's he did Prisoners and he did Blade Runner in twenty forty nine. I mean it's all of his movies are are phenomenal, beautiful movies. And but he's you know, he's into all the different parts of of these films, and he just does such a good job. So it's Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forth Whitaker, of course, and These alien pods show up all over the world and they recruit Amy Adams, who's the top one of the top linguists in in the world, to go and help figure out why they're here. And so so much of this movie is about the process of trying to learn a f a foreign language that nobody has any records for and or any any understanding of. And that's that's pivotal, you know, it's pivotal for the whole whole movie. What I love what I love about the movie is there's tons of emotion in the movie from the opening scene. If you watch the opening scene, I mean it got me right out of gate and just and so it kinda sets the stage that that there's there's a lot at stake in in Amy Adams life that's going on and and so much of it's great on a rewatch, you know, you could finish it and almost immediately watch it again and just and everything kind of clicks together. Which I love I love movies like that. I'm a sucker for.
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: but just how how uniquely focused the movie is, kinda end to end on the story. You don't have a whole lot of subplots. There are a few things going on, but they're all focused in on the objective of trying to understand why the aliens are here and some of the international dynamics that go along with it. But very well acted. You know, I I feel like it's it's frustrating with Jeremy Renner sometimes because everybody looks at him as like Hawkeye, right? And
Jeff: Everybody sometimes working, right?
Matt Ward: You know, he had Hurt Locker, he had this.
Jeff: That was Oscar's.
Matt Ward: Yeah, he had he's had tons of other great roles. And and he's he's been in T V series. I mean, there's there are lots of he's got a lot of depth to him. I think that's I think that's the danger with with all of the the Marvel actors is that these are amazing actors and they have amazing roles. you know, and and some of those can be part of the Marvel universe, but so many of the movies that they've made are just really good. And But it's just the the way that it develops, like you're saying, it's kind of this the slow progression, right? And and they're giving you they're dropping you little hints throughout the whole movie. And right there at the end, or close to the end, it starts to all come together. And again, I just love it. I think that th movies like that require so much patience to to not divulge too much, but to also keep people
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: moving along and interested. I I mean that's that's a five out of five for me. Like I I've watched Arrival over and over again. I I put it on pretty regularly just 'cause it it it again, it hits home. I thought that I I as I watch it, for me, my personality and just my likes, it's it's pretty flawless film.
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah, I would also give it a five out of five. Found it very, very enjoyable. obviously it's one it's not every everything everywhere all at once, right? It's not like some kind of action movie that you and it is funny, so when we sat down, I was gonna say, Oscar's first reaction was, this one has Hawkeye, right? Something like that.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Boom.
Jeff: And I was like, It does. It does. And then I
Matt Ward: Well and
Jeff: realized as we started watching it, I was like, This is like the first dramatic film that you like drama. Like I don't think he's ever watched a drama. He's always just on like action movies, kids' movies, things like that. it was a little heavy at times for sure. there are definitely some heavy parts and some tense scenes. I think overall he liked it. I I'll be curious to hear bring him on the podcast. We'll give him give him the
Matt Ward: That's right, give him on the pod.
Jeff: mic for a minute and let him let him say. I will say What what do you think about well one one thing that you pointed out real quick is the Project Hail Mary comparison and how Ryan
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: Gosling figured out the language in like three seconds and then arrivals, like
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: the whole movie's just about that.
Matt Ward: Yeah, and and I've I've heard that. I think there's an honest trailer or something where I I saw that too. And it's just it's it's funny that something as complex, right, as trying to I mean, you think of people coming to you know, the new world, you know, from our world history classes and stuff and trying to put together a language from nothing, right? From very from scratch. And how long a process that would actually be. historically how long it's taken. And and these are brilliant people trying to do it in arrival. And it's like, yeah, that and they don't give you a great sense, I don't feel like, in the movie anyway, of like how much time. Like they kinda they do a little few seconds or an explanation. Jeremy Moreno does an explanation where they start kind of trying to amass all the information they've been collecting. But but yeah, they don't sit there and say this took us six weeks, right? Or they didn't they don't say this was six months, right? and and so they leave a little bit up to up in the air. But yeah, it's a very Very interesting. I just I love the deep dive that they have to do for it. What do you think do you feel like your son was able to kind of follow along with everything?
Jeff: Yeah, it's definitely a little bit a little bit over his head. but, you know, in terms of like the more complex plot points, it was definitely over his head a little bit. But we paused the movie, talked about it for a second. But yeah, I was gonna ask you, what were your thoughts on the you know, I guess it's the eighty ninth Academy Awards, but it was February twenty seventeen arrival was on the list. This was the year of La La Land, Hagsaw Ridge. Moonlight.
Matt Ward: That was a really good year, right? It was a really good year. Yeah.
Jeff: It was a good year for movies. Manchester by the Sea was also really good. Lion was pretty good.
Matt Ward: Yeah, I mean I I mean that year I I think I probably would still I mean I I feel like La La Land should have won. I mean they announced it, right? Just come on, just give it to them. But yeah, I mean there there were tons of great movies that year. But I mean for me I feel like La La Land was just phenomenal. It was so unique, right, to what we've we had had for so long and I I don't know. So that's another one where I just I think an arrival
Jeff: So so you're also giving La Land a five out of five, I assume.
Matt Ward: Yeah, I would give I would absolutely give La La Land five out of five. I I I love La La La Land. I thought it was very well done and just tells a very fun, interesting story about, you know, life in Hollywood and trying to make it make it big. So I'm I'm I'm okay. I w I mean Moonlight, I never watched Moonlight. Did you check that one out? That
Jeff: Nope. No, I haven't seen it.
Matt Ward: was a little above my pay grade on that one. I decided to move on. But a lot of these other ones I I feel like were were all it was it was a very good year, competitive year. I I think that La La Land probably deserved it. but can't go back. Can't change They didn't Yeah.
Jeff: Yeah, well the Academy, like we said, the Academy makes some interesting choices sometimes and sometimes it's sometimes it has more to do with the cultural moment. you know that's
Matt Ward: Yeah. definitely that yeah, for that one.
Jeff: why sometimes LGBT movies kind of stand out a little bit more, maybe they just you know, there's a movement that maybe means a lot to the Academy in that year or I I don't even remember what the context was of the twenty seventeen Academy Awards, but clearly they really enjoyed the movie. And you I had a little chat with Chat GPT about this, and my best friend, and it
Matt Ward: Best friend.
Jeff: said, you know, the the difference is that arrival was kind of this like big budget, like big drama. Moonlight was a pretty intimate portrait. And I get it. I haven't seen it, but I I get it. you know, kind of that perspective. Again, Lala Land, another kind of big movie, big stars, arrival, big movie, big stars. And sometimes they like to go with an independent that, you know, has a Kind of a more intimate portrait. which we you know, we appreciated it in Coda we just talked about last week. So all right,
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah.
Jeff: well we've got one more topic, which is the top five Pixar movies. You got you got yours?
Matt Ward: Yeah. That's right. I've got mine. Yeah. I think
Jeff: Okay.
Matt Ward: I you know, as as one who who loved the the early days of of Pixar, I think you'll you'll probably see that that comes out a little bit. But I'll go ahead and you want me to lead off with number five?
Jeff: Well, quick commentary. Who who likes this is like people who like Weez like more recent Weezer songs than the old stuff. It's like
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: you know, you you'd have to be a little bit of a psycho to to like the new the new Pixar movies more than the old Pixar movies. Yeah, if anyone's listening it Yeah, if you really
Matt Ward: go a go ahead and ostracize any it's like, that's this is my favorite. I don't know what you guys talking about. Incredibles two is better than Incredibles One. Like, come on.
Jeff: liked I mean I actually I will throw out a quick quick plug for like Hoppers Inside Out 2 was pretty good. I I think Pixar still comes out with good stuff, but those were not on my top five. So all right. Well, diving in. So
Matt Ward: Yeah. Well and and it's the key people the key people of Pixar, right? The the P doctors and things like that that are still making it making it happen. So anyway.
Jeff: So they've come out with thirty one movies. That's all. So this is like
Matt Ward: Yeah. Quite a
Jeff: a shorter list than the Academy Awards. So maybe maybe it made the the choice a little bit easier. So all right, go ahead, number five.
Matt Ward: Yeah. All right, I'm going with number five. Number five, Ratatouille. The mouse
Jeff: Good one.
Matt Ward: or the rat. Rat? I guess that's the name, right? Rat Atouille.
Jeff: Are it?
Matt Ward: he he's got a lot of dreams. He's got some big dreams and beautifully shot and or beautifully animated, right? How they put it all together and just kind of a fun, unique story. I loved in the early days of Pixar how unique the stories were, right? And that That definitely I think Ratatouille definitely brings that in. It's just tons of fun to watch. I I remember watching it the first time being like, like not really my my thing, but over time I've appreciated a lot. Maybe as I've as I've matured or as I've gotten older, I've just been like, it was solidly done. And that was another that was like the side that was a Brad Bird second contribution, right? He did Incredibles and then he did Ratatouille. So very good. Very well done. Number five for you.
Jeff: I think this one might make you list, but I went with Toy Story Three.
Matt Ward: It did not make my list. Spoiler. Boom.
Jeff: no, I like Toy Story Three. You know, I still have a place in my heart I haven't seen Toy Story Five, so I can't say and I haven't, you know, rewatched Toy Story Four recently, so I can't remember i if it was good or bad, but I loved the ending of Toy Story Three and I like the storyline of Toy Story Three. It's fun, but the ending at the time really hit me and I really enjoyed it and Kind of felt like they should have wrapped up there. but
Matt Ward: Absolutely. Yeah.
Jeff: really, really enjoy Toys Tour three. Definitely number five is a hard one because there's a there's a few like kind of honorary mentions, honorable mentions that that I could throw in, but we'll we'll leave it there for now. So what all right, what you got for number four?
Matt Ward: Number four, the Incredibles. Very well done. Just kind of it was an interesting
Jeff: Good one.
Matt Ward: take. There's a whole lot of they mixed it, right? I remember at the time people I remember listening to one of the reviews right when it came out, and people were like, it's a little more it's got a little more adult stuff in there, you know? So there's a little talk about infidelity and things. or maybe not talk, but you know, insinuation, if nothing else. I think they actually do talk about They do. and so but just very it I felt like it was a new spin. on the superhero genre. and it was pre a lot of at least a lot of the the Marvel spin-offs and and run ups and stuff like that to that to to Marvel. So it was unique at the time. But the story is just great. It's a phenomenal story, wonderful action sequences, beautiful voices. the Craig Nelson from Coach, right? From the Coach T V series.
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: Classic, right? Co Coach was a life changing T V show.
Jeff: We all loved coach. Give that one an Emmy.
Matt Ward: Yeah, we all love coach. and but just great. You know, lot a lot of great, great voice talent in there. Very well done. And
Jeff: did you ever see Incredibles Two?
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah, I watch Incredibles too. I mean it's good. I mean, is it on your top five? Is is Incredibles two up there?
Jeff: I don't know if I ever saw. Yeah, Incredibles 2 obviously is my next one. No, my number
Matt Ward: Boom. I mean it was fine.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah. Alright, number four. I y
Matt Ward: All right, sorry, number four. Number four.
Jeff: you know, I bet you anything I did watch it, I just can't remember.
Matt Ward: Yeah, I mean I watched it. It wasn't bad. It was it was well done. It's just you know, whenever you bring in come out with a sequel that's coming in fifteen, twenty years later, and you're kinda like, I don't know, I was I was probably fine with just the original, just resting on it. I and I like that. I like the discipline that it takes to say, This is my one and done, right? Like I'm not we're not coming back. It's like it's the end of Rocky II, right? Ain't gonna be no rema no, first one. At the end of the first one, ain't gonna be no rematch, right? And then but there were I mean there was a But there was a rematch. Yeah, yeah,
Jeff: There was a rematch. They wanted the money. Can't blame them.
Matt Ward: you do it for the money, right? So the sequel can happen. So anyway. All right. Number
Jeff: Do it for the money. All right. So my number four is I'm going with Monsters University.
Matt Ward: Okay.
Jeff: I you know, I like Monsters Inc. and Monsters University. We've watched these a few times since we've you know, since Oscar's been into movies and I like I just yeah, I enjoy those characters a lot. and
Matt Ward: You are you is is Monsters Inc. gonna be are we I I don't wanna spoil it but
Jeff: No, no. I didn't put Monsters Inc. on there. I mean maybe I should have, but I I enjoyed Monsters University a little bit more than Monsters Inc., but I'm just
Matt Ward: Really?
Jeff: giving the Monsters franchise you know. Maybe I'll give the Monsters Franchise number four. But I did choose. I went with Monsters. I went with Monsters University. But
Matt Ward: Yeah, the Monsters Ranch has great. But if you have to choose. That's like finding Nemo and finding Dory. You can't you can't w take claim of both. But no, that's it was good.
Jeff: yeah, and if I had to choose between finding Nemo and f and finding Dory, I'd choose Finding Nemo. No offense.
Matt Ward: There go. There you go.
Jeff: No offense to Dory, who's great. All right.
Matt Ward: Yeah. Yeah, it's good. It is it was more of the same I guess, but it was very funny. all right. You ready for number three?
Jeff: Yeah. Let's keep it rolling. Let's keep it rolling. Number three.
Matt Ward: Up. There you go.
Jeff: Good one.
Matt Ward: Love up. That was I I love the the idea of balloons being able to lift your house, you know? I'm I'm not sure. I didn't wa I watched some of the behind the scenes actually. I don't remember if they if they sat there and said, we did some research and This is the amount of I don't think I don't know if that's possible, right? Would a hot air balloon lift a house? I don't think it would lift my house. And would the house stay together, right? There's another big question. But I love the movie. I think it's hilarious. I love how the story moves. and just some really I mean it's heartfelt. And and yeah, I just I love the visuals of it. I think it's kinda I and it you know, it's I know I know some people are probably won't put it up up there. But but I thought it was it was it was well done, it's memorable. My kids all I'll really enjoy it.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah, I like up. to answer your question, it is physically impossible for for for the balloons. I mean, maybe a trailer or maybe if you
Matt Ward: Put a few hot air balloons on there and you see, you know, maybe a trailer? Like if you if you lived in a trailer home, you know.
Jeff: had like steel like steel beams all through the house.
Matt Ward: Just keep on yeah, it's like as you lift it, I'm just sure I I should be able to answer my own questions, right? Well he he put it in the chimney, right? So I'm sure that that's sufficient to
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: he just tied it to the fireplace.
Jeff: Just for anyone listening, Matt did study mechanical engineering. He was a mechanical engineer.
Matt Ward: with McKeg. Tell me again, Jeff, is this possible? maybe one person. Maybe one person could just take off or a chair, you know? Anyway.
Jeff: Well I ha no, I no, there's a video. There's a video of a guy. He did balloons in a chunk. Yeah. K crazy person.
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah, there have been people though. No, good enough.
Jeff: All right, number three. I went with I know. Now that guy's not gonna listen to our podcast.
Matt Ward: No, that's ready's out.
Jeff: all right, I'm going with Wally for number three.
Matt Ward: Okay, very good.
Jeff: yeah. Great story, great yeah, definitely a unique story. that I've always really enjoyed. I love the I love the idea of a movie that has like no real dialogue and and is still extremely engaging and extreme you know, extremely fun. and while he he's just adorable. You know, he's just like he's he's a character everyone can love. So yeah, I think so.
Matt Ward: Everybody's best friend. Yeah. Sorry, friends with the cockroach, friends with the strangers.
Jeff: He he loves every you know, he's just like from the very opening scene, you just know he's full of love. He's listening to Hello Dolly. You know, he's
Matt Ward: Yeah. I mean you can't go wrong if you're listening to Hello Dolly.
Jeff: Gangarong. Gangarong. Put on your Sunday clothes.
Matt Ward: But on your Sunday clothes, man.
Jeff: All right, number two, what you got?
Matt Ward: Number number two, Toy Story Two. Love Toy Story Two. Thought that was the just the most taut of all the Toy
Jeff: Hmm.
Matt Ward: Story movies. Wonderful story, fun introduction. bring in Zerg and and they bring in Newman, you know, from Seinfeld doing voice acting on there. So I just felt like and they they brought in a lot of different characters that stuck around for the, you know, subsequent films and I just enjoyed that one. I thought it was a lot more exciting, right? There's not there's not nearly as much heart to it. I mean there there were moments I guess, but it's just a fun, exciting film, end to end. So I'm a big fan of Toy Story too.
Jeff: It was a great one. Was it Larry's is it Larry's toy barn? Is that his name?
Matt Ward: So Alice Toy Bonner? I don't know. I don't know. That that's that's obscure, Jeff. I can't I can't be held accountable for such such knowledge.
Jeff: Alice Toyburn? I think it's Alice Alice Toyburn. We just re Deep Deep Cut. We we we just re watched that one recently. Yeah, I think it's Alice Toy Barn. And no that was a that was a good one.
Matt Ward: Yeah. All right. Number two.
Jeff: Number two for me, Coco. Coco, great story,
Matt Ward: coca.
Jeff: great heartfelt story, great music. Yeah, big fan of Coco. I don't
Matt Ward: Yeah.
Jeff: know what else to say about it except like probably one of my probably one of my favorite soundtracks. We still sing it like randomly here in the family, so
Matt Ward: Yeah, yeah, remember me. That's a that's that's a really good one. Well and I I think my favorite part of Coco is how the kid just sits in front of the TV watching the guy play the guitar. This is like classic Disney, right? You watch T V, somebody playing the guitar, he sits there with his little guitar and then he's just like awesome at it. And it's like way to follow like way to teach kids how to follow their dreams right there. It's like you only need just watch TV. Watch T V for a bit, you'll get it. You'll get it. It's and you'll be awesome at it. But I
Jeff: Yeah. Yeah.
Matt Ward: No need to practice. Like you're practicing by watching and playing a little bit. So yeah, I love I love Coco. That was very very well done. Very heartfelt. And and a little just a little a little bit into what's it, the Day of the Dead and things like that. So
Jeff: Yeah, I would say like it's Disney, but you know, Encanto is another one that's like it it's not Pixar, but you know, kind of falls in the same realm of like this kind of Latino musical that has some great music and great stories. All right. Well, I would put
Matt Ward: You are you putting Encanto up there, Jeff? That's I
Jeff: Encanto, but I'm pretty sure Encanto is not Encanto. It's not Pixar. Yeah. Disqualified. But if we ever have
Matt Ward: It's not Disney. it's not it's not Pixar. So yeah, it's it's disqualified from our list. But but I
Jeff: a Disney animated top five, Encanto might
Matt Ward: Yeah,
Jeff: be on there.
Matt Ward: Encanto was rough. That was I mean they like they completely
Jeff: You know, like it kinda you
Matt Ward: like they pushed out their the their son just for being a little doomsday. Come on. He's living in the walls. alright. alright, number
Jeff: Well, it's got it's definitely got some it's got some plottles. All right, number one.
Matt Ward: number one, you already did it. Wally. I love Wally to death. such I mean, they have these different, you know, phases in the story. I just thought that it was so clever, right? So unique at the time. And And still, I mean, nobody's really done anything that's really like WALL-E, right? And and I've loved that they d they have not done a WALL E too, which I think is admirable. You know, I'm still waiting for Bugs Life too, because I think that they could just keep on developing that bad boy as much as they want. But WALL-E, it was just it's so so well done and just compact, tells a very interesting story, and I just feel like across the board it was is well thought out and ex you know, very well executed. All right. Number one for you. yeah.
Jeff: it's crazy. It's it's crazy. The only overlap that we have is is Wally. but that's probably gonna be a common theme in our top five lists.
Matt Ward: It's because it's phenomenal. That's
Jeff: the my number one movie is Inside Out. Yeah,
Matt Ward: Not really. All right.
Jeff: yeah. Really like Inside Out. Maybe not Inside Out too so much, although I thought that one was pretty good. But Inside Out I think is just like a great I don't know. Maybe I just really like it because Oscar used to watch it like a million times when he was a kid. I don't even know when he was younger. but I think like for emotional development or like emotional kind of insight. Again, I just maybe I know that movie better than any other Pixar movie because I've seen it so many times. but I just I love the way the different emotions interact and I think it has a lot of you know, really witty parts as well.
Matt Ward: Yeah, definitely.
Jeff: what's the guy's name? Who's the who's your friend who likes to play? Lisa's gonna get mad at me because I can't remember his name. Bing Bung. Bing Bung, thank you. I'm glad you're here.
Matt Ward: Bing Bong, right? Is that Bing Bong? He's the elephant. Yeah, Bing Bong. Yeah. And I will I will say that that part with Bing Bong, like at kinda at the end of his time in the film, it was one where, you know, I was watching the movie and I just randomly got like super emotional watching it, which is so goofy.
Jeff: yeah.
Matt Ward: And there's a moment in soul, which certainly did not that was not a top five for me by any means, but there's a part where he's just reflecting on life. And he's just kinda like talking about like the beauty all around him. And there's another one where it's just like it's beautiful. Like and I get a little get a little emotional here and there, but Inside Out was so well done and is well researched, you know, it and and just kind of made it a very digestible film also.
Jeff: Yeah, yeah. It was it was a fun one. So well they've made a lot of good ones, that's for sure. And hopefully there are more to come. I actually just quick plug. We did watch Hoppers. I don't know if you've seen that one, but that one came out
Matt Ward: I've seen parts of it.
Jeff: pretty recently, and that one was pretty good. And obviously you're gonna watch Choice Story Five next week. so I mean they I think they still I mean turning red was pretty good. You didn't like turning red? You weren't a fan.
Matt Ward: Whoa. Turning red. No. I mean, no. I yeah, different different strokes for different folks, right?
Jeff: It's okay. That's okay. Anyway. they have announced Incredibles three and Coco two though. Don't know how I feel about that. But
Matt Ward: Yeah. I mean, whatever. They can just keep on keep on pumping those babies out. The those
Jeff: Hey. Looking forward to Toy Story Six and twenty thirty.
Matt Ward: they need to do the live action toy story. That's what we need to get into, is just have these toys dress up and you know, live action a few more. I'm I'm waiting for, you know, live action, Great Mouse Detective, live action, rescuers down under. I mean, there's so many so many hits out there. They can I'm sure it would get the people in. so all right. Anything
Jeff: Yeah.
Matt Ward: else for today, Jeff?
Jeff: I think that's it for today. Good chat. You can do you can do our cat you can do our catchphrase?
Matt Ward: Yeah, all right. Yeah, I'm gonna do all right, so yeah, so keep watching that film and onward and filmward.
Jeff: We'll work on it. See ya mate.
Matt Ward: Yeah, we'll keep working on it. All right. See you next week.
