Jeff
Jeff went in with low expectations after a trailer he thought was weak, and walked out pleasantly surprised. Two Filipino-American best friends, one studious, one wild, chase a childhood dream of visiting a mythical island tied to one of their grandmothers, and the trip turns into a Hangover-style morning-after mystery. He loved the pacing, saying the movie stayed funny and engaging the whole way through without the usual mid-movie lull, and dug into the small, quirky details: a three-eyed baby still attached to his umbilical cord, a running pink-eye gag, an oddly animated merman who felt like he wandered in from a different movie but was fun anyway. Five out of five, by his own standard that a five just means he'd watch it again.
Matt
Matt enjoyed the animation and the slice of Filipino culture, especially the grandmother relationship and the early barbecue scenes, and compared the overall feel to Avatar: The Last Airbender rather than Jeff's Spider-Verse comparison. The story itself was the problem for him: a hangover-style "what happened last night" structure he found hard to follow, with pacing that dragged once they actually reached the island. He also singled out the merman's animation as jarringly different from the rest of the film, like a different team handled it. He landed on three out of five, saying the ending mostly redeemed his issues with the pacing.
